BENNINGTON — For three decades, the unmistakable aroma of garlic has signaled the arrival of one of New England’s most beloved festivals. In 2025, the garlic festival in Bennington, also known recently as Garlic Town USA, will celebrate its 30th anniversary, marking a major milestone for this long-standing event that has brought together farmers, artisans, musicians, food lovers, and garlic enthusiasts from across the country.

A Rich History, A Thriving Tradition

Originally founded in 1995 as the Southern Vermont Garlic and Herb Festival in Wilmington, VT, the event started as a small farmers' market celebrating the stinking rose. By 2008, the Bennington Chamber of Commerce—now the Southwestern Vermont Chamber—brought the festival to Bennington, where it grew exponentially under the leadership of event chair Lindy Lynch. By 2019, it had expanded by 260%, welcoming over 16,000 attendees and receiving numerous accolades including “Top 10 Garlic Festival in the World.”

After a brief pandemic-related pivot in 2020, the Chamber rebranded the event as Garlic Town, USA, relocating it to downtown Bennington. Since then, it has flourished as a vibrant, one-day festival that continues to honor its roots while embracing new energy, vendors, and experiences.

What to Expect for the 30th Anniversary

The 2025 festival, held on Saturday of Labor Day Weekend annually, is produced by Southwestern Vermont Chamber of Commerce with presenting sponsors Union South and Hoffman Car Wash. This year promises to be the most exciting yet, featuring:

  • Live music and entertainment throughout the day

  • A vibrant downtown atmosphere, with local businesses offering garlic-inspired specials

  • Interactive kids' activities and family-friendly fun

  • Delicious food trucks serving garlicky dishes from New England and around the world

  • A zero-waste initiative, ensuring sustainability with the commitment of organizers, vendors, guests, and volunteers
